MasterCard Credit Cards
MasterCard is the world's second largest credit-card
company. It was founded in 1966 to be a direct
competitor to Visa's predecessor, BankAmericard.
MasterCard itself also started with a different
name: MasterCharge Card in those days. It was
in 1979 when the "charge" was taken
out of the name, both to shorten the name, and
also to allow the company to more easily get into
other financial businesses besides credit (This
foreshadowed the day when debit cards would account
for a huge part of their business). Then in 2006,
they changed their name again to MasterCard Worldwide,
to give it more of a global image. Currently more
than 26,000 financial institutions offer MasterCard.
